One of the first steps which helped us understand our brother is discovering what he can do and under what circumstances.
As the first series of the Decode Lab, let’s begin by celebrating the achievements of individuals we know with Autism.
Please share here: what did you discover an individual with Autism can do and how did that discovery help you learn about the individual?
Every discovery is special, whether large or small. As I have shared before, the smallest of discoveries have been very insightful about my brother.
As a recap, here are the some of the precious things we discovered with my brother:
- His beautiful laugh and sense of humor … as we watched a movie, he joined us in the fun with his infectious laugh.
- He look of concern … as he peered over with a smile trying to cheer me up when I was sick.
- His musical talent as I turned to see who was playing my favorite song on the piano … it was my brother!
- His sharp mental math skills as he negotiates the number of candies he can eat … he is a good negotiator.
- His quiet focus as he took notes in his science class … he fit right in in the science classroom.
So join in the “Can Do” celebration here! I am excited to see what discoveries we can make collectively. Every discovery counts … there is no such thing as a small discovery!
